About the Split Bill Calculator

An even split is easy but unfair when one person had a salad and another had steak and two cocktails. This calculator takes each person's items, adds a share of anything ordered for the table, then divides tax and tip in proportion to what each person actually spent — the method most people agree is fair once it is spelled out.

How to use the Split Bill Calculator

  1. Add each person and type their item prices separated by commas.
  2. Enter anything shared by the table as a single total.
  3. Set the tax and tip percentages.
  4. Read the table to see exactly what each person owes.

Why use this tool?

Proportional tax and tip

Someone with 30% of the order pays 30% of the tax and tip — not an equal slice.

Shared items handled

Starters and table drinks are split evenly, separate from individual orders.

No currency assumed

Works with any currency; enter plain numbers and read plain numbers back.

Frequently asked questions

Should tip be split evenly or by order size?

By order size is the fairer default, since a larger order takes more service. Some groups prefer an even tip split — the shared-items field lets you approximate that.

Do I tip before or after tax?

Etiquette favours the pre-tax subtotal, but most people tip on the total shown. On a $50 meal the difference is under a dollar.

What about someone who only had water?

Enter no items for them. They will owe zero unless there is a shared total, in which case they pay only their share of that.
