About the Speech to Text
Voice typing is faster than keyboard typing for most people — comfortably two to three times faster for first drafts. This tool taps the speech recognition built into Chrome and Edge, transcribing as you speak so you can dictate notes, emails, blog outlines or meeting summaries and then tidy them up in the same box.
How to use the Speech to Text
- Choose the language you will speak in.
- Press Start listening and allow microphone access when your browser asks.
- Speak naturally — say 'comma', 'full stop' or 'new line' where you want punctuation.
- Press Stop, edit the transcript directly in the box, then copy it.

Which browsers support this?
Chrome and Edge on desktop and Android work well, and Safari has partial support. Firefox currently has no built-in speech recognition, so the tool will tell you if your browser cannot run it.
Can I transcribe an audio file?
No — this tool listens to a live microphone. To transcribe a recording you can play the file through your speakers with the microphone listening, though quality will be lower than a dedicated transcription service.
How do I add punctuation?
Say the punctuation out loud: 'comma', 'period' or 'full stop', 'question mark', 'new paragraph'. Support varies by language.
