About the Video to GIF Converter
A GIF earns its place when a clip is short, silent and needs to play automatically — a bug reproduction, a UI walkthrough, a reaction clip in a chat. This converter reads frames straight from the video in your browser, quantises each one to a 256-colour palette and assembles the GIF locally, so nothing is uploaded and there is no queue to wait in.
When a GIF is the right answer
GIF survives because of one property no video format matches: it plays anywhere, automatically, silently, with no player controls and no permission prompts. Paste one into a chat, an issue tracker, a pull request or an email and it simply moves.
That makes it ideal for short, silent, looping things — a bug reproduction, a three-second UI walkthrough, a before-and-after, a reaction clip. It is the wrong choice for anything long, anything with sound, and anything where quality matters, because the format is from 1987 and is limited to 256 colours per frame.
How the conversion works here
The browser seeks the video to each moment in turn, draws that frame onto a canvas at the width you chose, and reads the pixels back out. Each frame is then reduced to a palette of at most 256 colours, and the palette plus the palette-indexed pixels are written into the GIF stream.
All of that happens on your machine using the video decoder already in the browser, which is why there is no upload, no file size limit imposed by a server, and no queue. It is also why long clips are slow: every frame has to be seeked, decoded, drawn and quantised one at a time.
The three settings that control file size
Width has the biggest effect, because file size scales with the number of pixels in each frame. Halving the width from 480 to 240 cuts the data to roughly a quarter. Frame rate is next: a GIF stores every frame in full, so 20 frames per second is twice the data of 10. Length multiplies both.
The order to adjust them in is width, then length, then frame rate. Ten frames per second reads as smooth motion for most content, and dropping below about 8 starts to look like a slideshow. If your GIF is still too big at 240 pixels wide and 8 fps, the clip is too long for the format.
The 256-colour limit, and why gradients look bad
A GIF frame can reference at most 256 distinct colours. A photographic frame typically contains tens of thousands, so the encoder has to choose a representative palette and map everything else to the nearest entry. On flat graphics and screen recordings the result is indistinguishable from the original. On skies, skin tones and soft gradients, it produces visible banding.
This converter builds a fresh palette for each frame rather than sharing one across the whole clip, which handles scene changes and colour shifts far better. Even so, a sunset will never look right as a GIF. Use a video for that.
How GIF compares to a modern video file
A three-second clip at 480 pixels wide might be 1.5 MB as a GIF and around 100 KB as an MP4 or WebM at better visual quality. That is roughly an order of magnitude, and it is why most platforms that appear to support GIFs — social networks, messaging apps, documentation sites — quietly convert them to video on upload.
So if the destination accepts video, upload video. Use GIF when the destination genuinely does not: certain email clients, older wikis, some internal tools, and anywhere you need a file that can be dragged into a comment box and just work.
Making a GIF that reads well
Trim ruthlessly. A viewer sees a GIF loop three or four times in the seconds they spend on it, and a tight two-second clip communicates far more than an eight-second one containing two seconds of content.
Crop or scale so the important part of the frame is large — a full-screen recording shrunk to 400 pixels wide makes any text unreadable. If you are demonstrating an interface, record the region rather than the whole desktop, and slow the mouse down while recording so the motion survives at a low frame rate.
Limits and troubleshooting
The tool caps a job at 150 frames so your browser stays responsive, which means 15 seconds at 10 fps or about 6 seconds at 24. If rendering stalls, lower the width first — memory use is dominated by frame area, and phones have far less headroom than laptops.
If the video will not load at all, the codec is the usual culprit; export a standard H.264 MP4 and try again. And if the GIF comes out with the last frame sticking, that is normally a very short final frame in the source — shorten the clip by a tenth of a second and it resolves.
