About the Image Resizer

Uploads get rejected for the wrong dimensions far more often than for the wrong file size. Dimensions and file size are different problems

People often use resize and compress interchangeably, but they change different things. Dimensions are how many pixels wide and tall the image is — that is what an upload form means when it demands 1280 by 720. File size is how many kilobytes the file occupies, which depends on dimensions, format and compression quality together.

Changing dimensions does reduce file size, usually dramatically, because there are simply fewer pixels to store. But if a platform rejects your image for being the wrong shape, no amount of compression helps; you need the resizer. If it rejects it for being too heavy, resizing is one of two tools, alongside the compressor.

Aspect ratio: the thing that actually goes wrong

Aspect ratio is the relationship between width and height. A 16:9 image is 1.78 times wider than it is tall; a square is 1:1. If you change width and height independently, the picture stretches, and human faces make this obvious instantly even to people who cannot say why the image looks wrong.

The proportion lock prevents it: type one dimension and the other follows. Turn it off only when you have deliberately chosen a target that matches your source's ratio, or when you intend to crop first. The presets turn it off automatically because they set both numbers at once.

The sizes platforms expect

A YouTube thumbnail is 1280 by 720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB. An Instagram square post is 1080 by 1080, and the portrait format is 1080 by 1350. A Full HD screen or video frame is 1920 by 1080. The image used for social link previews — the one that appears when a page is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn or X — is 1200 by 628.

These numbers matter because platforms scale whatever you give them, and scaling something with the wrong ratio means cropping. A square logo uploaded as a link preview typically loses its top and bottom. Resizing to the platform's exact dimensions puts that decision in your hands rather than an algorithm's.

Why enlarging never works well

Scaling an image up asks the software to invent pixels that were never captured. Every algorithm does this by averaging neighbours, which is why enlarged images look soft and slightly plastic. The detail is not hidden; it was never recorded.

If you need a larger version, the answer is almost always to go back to the original file — the camera's full-resolution export, the designer's source document, the vector logo. A vector file in particular can be exported at any size with no loss at all, which is why logos should be kept as SVG or AI wherever possible.

Downscaling well

Reducing size is the safe direction, but quality still varies with how the reduction is done. This tool sets the browser's image smoothing to its highest quality setting, which averages groups of source pixels rather than simply dropping some of them. Without that, fine textures and diagonal lines pick up a jagged, shimmering look.

One practical note: downscale in a single step rather than repeatedly. Taking a 4000 pixel image to 400 in one pass gives a better result than four successive halvings, and it is faster.

Resize first, or compress first?

Resize first. Compression quality is applied to whatever pixels exist at the moment of export, so shrinking the dimensions beforehand means the compressor is working on a smaller, cleaner image and can afford a higher quality setting.

The usual pipeline for web images is: crop to the ratio you want, resize to the maximum display width times two, then export as WebP or JPG at around 75% quality. That sequence produces smaller files at better quality than doing the same steps in any other order.

Format choice on the way out

Once resized, pick the output format for the destination. JPG for photographs going anywhere unpredictable. WebP for photographs on a site you control, for a meaningful size saving. PNG when the image has transparency or sharp text that must stay crisp — a resized screenshot, for example, is much better as PNG.

Bear in mind that a PNG of a photograph, even a small one, will be several times the size of the JPG equivalent. If the file size looks alarming after resizing, the format is usually the reason rather than the dimensions.
